When people think of Fat Joe, they think of the hardcore gangsta rapper. Definitely, he is a nice guy, and he makes hits, but Fat Joe comes off as a very tough guy. Fitting this tough persona is his nickname, “Joey Crack.”
On many of his 2000s records, Fat Joe often shouts “CRACK,” and calls himself “Joey Crack.” Because of his background, most people felt the nickname came from drugs. However, in 2004, a radio personality said the nickname came from his weight and his back being exposed.
Until tonight, stories like that came off as a joke, but Fat Joe sat down with Angie Martinez for “Untold Stories of Hip Hop,” where he told the real. Asked about his nickname, “Crack,” Fat Joe confirmed the 2004 rumors. When he was in school, the teacher would ask him to write on the board, and his pants would sag down, and the girls began calling him “Joey Crack.”
