FBI raids Oakland mayor’s home amid campaign controversy
In a surprising development early Thursday, the FBI conducted a raid at the home of Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao, just hours after a shooting at Lake Merritt and the verification of signatures for a recall campaign against her.
The raid occurred around 5:30 a.m. on the 100 block of Maiden Lane. FBI spokesperson, Cameron Polan, confirmed the operation, stating:
“The FBI is conducting court authorized law enforcement activity on Maiden Lane.”
However, details regarding the raid’s purpose remain undisclosed.
Witnesses reported federal agents leaving the residence with paper boxes, clipboards, and large black plastic tubs by 10 a.m. The mayor’s office deferred all inquiries to the FBI.
Simultaneously, a related FBI raid took place at 4320 View Crest Court in the Oakland hills, the home of Andy Duong, connected to the Duong family’s Cal Waste Solutions. This location has been under scrutiny for potentially illegal campaign contributions and money laundering, with ties to donations made to Oakland city councilmembers. These members are including Mayor Thao.
The raids also coincide with ongoing legal issues involving Cal Waste Solutions, including a lawsuit from the city over alleged over-charging of customers and a controversial land-use deal under review by the Oakland City Council.
As the investigation unfolds, the exact implications for Mayor Thao and her administration remain to be seen. The FBI’s actions highlight the intensifying scrutiny on Oakland’s political and business interactions.
