Big Pokey is a legend in Texas hip hop, but best known nationally for his feature on Paul Wall’s “Sittin Sideways.” That song came out eighteen years ago and Big Pokey was still doing shows. Obviously, there is much more music in his discography, aside from that feature. Over the weekend, Big Pokey was performing them, when he met his untimely demise. While performing, he passed out, and he never woke up.

Big Pokey definitely made his impact, over the years. In fact, Paul Wall calling on him for “Sittin Sideways” showed the impact Big Pokey was having, even back then. A native of Beaumont, Texas, he was located just outside of Houston. When the city took over hip hop, in the 2005 period, he didn’t have the same kind of commercial success. However, he did end up getting his share of the spotlight, when the time came.

Big Pokey was one of the founders of the Screwed Up Click. He was one of DJ Screw’s most-trusted artists. When DJ Screw passed away, Big Pokey was one of the ones continuing the legacy. This is why he had the appeal that he had. After well over two decades in the game, Big Pokey was still doing his thing. This past weekend, he was performing at a Juneteenth concert, and the crowd watch his life come to an end, right in the middle of his performance.
