Clearly, there were female rappers before the 1990s. However, the role of the femcee changed, during the 1990s. The biggest reason for this change was Foxy Brown and Lil’ Kim, as these ladies were unafraid to use their sex appeal to their advantage.
Without a doubt, they inspired the likes of Remy Ma, Nicki Minaj, and Cardi B. Nearly all female rappers now come out showing all of their stuff. That, plus the raunchy lyrics have a genesis in the Foxy Brown and Lil’ Kim era.
Despite the strong sex appeal, Foxy Brown came through with this message. Over the past few months, Russell Simmons has faced a lot of backlash, as he’s been accused of groping women, so he stepped down from his companies. But, Foxy Brown is praising Russell Simmons, as he signed her to Def Jam, and she is saying he never did anything of the sort to her.
