Georgia teen dies from suspected overdose at school; Arrest made

Tragedy struck Dunwoody High School in Georgia. 15-year-old Mia Dieguez tragically died after suffering a medical emergency on campus. It was believed to be an overdose. Fire officials reported that Mia went into cardiac arrest on Monday and was promptly rushed to the hospital. Sadly, she did not survive.

The incident occurred during a day of testing at the school. Thus, it prompted an immediate lockdown to control movement within the facility. As a result, ensuring a secure environment as emergency services responded. The school community was informed of the distressing event later that afternoon. Principal Tom Bass expressed deep sympathies to Mia’s family and friends.

In a distressing development, police made an arrest on Monday evening in connection with Mia’s death. Details regarding the identity of the arrested individual or the specific charges have not been disclosed. Also, it remains unclear if the arrested person is a student.

Mia’s sister, Paola Covarrubias, has voiced her belief that Mia’s death was due to an overdose of a fentanyl-laced pill given to her at school. Thus, highlighting a severe drug issue within the community. This sentiment was echoed by Thomas Tran, a 10th grader. He described the incident as indicative of a significant drug problem among students, particularly as academic pressures mount.

State Representative Long Tran, Thomas’ father, commented on the broader issue of drug use in schools. It’s particularly around stressful periods like finals week. He noted that such pressures might drive some students to substance use as they seek an edge in their academic performance.

In response to the tragedy, Principal Bass announced that grief counseling would be available for students and staff. Also, he urged parents to engage in open conversations with their children about drug use and its dangers.
