Grand Daddy IU passes away at age 54

Grand Daddy I.U. rose to fame in the late 1980s. A native of Hempstead, in Long Island, I.U. met Biz Markie, who helped him get signed to Cold Chillin’ Records. As a result, he released his debut album, Smooth Assassin, which boasted his hit singles, “Something New” and “Sugar Free.” In 2015, Grand Daddy I.U. spoke on some of the biggest moments of his career, as he was reflecting on his legacy. Sadly, those closest to him are revealing he passed away.

Grand Daddy I.U. was not just one of the best lyricists, he also was a great writer. During the first five years of his career, I.U. only released two albums. However, that same span of time saw him writing for some of the bigger names in the industry. A multi talent, Grand Daddy I.U. moved into production, after his second album disappointed. After that, he began producing for the likes of KRS-One, Ice-T, Das EFX, and many others.

Grand Daddy I.U. would return to creating music, as an emcee, in 2007. That year, I.U. would go onto release his third album. Finally, in 2015, Grand Daddy I.U. released P.I.M.P. (Paper Is My Priority), which would go onto become his final album. During the final eight years of his life, I.U. bonded with Da Inphamus Amadeus, signing to his Get@Em Recordz. Amadeus would be among the first people to break the sad news of I.U.’s sudden passing.
