Soap operas are supposedly dying, but on primetime, they have become the leading form of entertainment. The latest primetime drama to take over television is “Greenleaf,” an OWN original. On Tuesday, the show made its series premiere.
“Greenleaf” has a very special actress on the show in Oprah Winfrey, the owner of the OWN network. She is starring in her first series in over thirty years. Other stars include Lynn Whitfield, Merle Dandridge, and Keith David, while Lionsgate produces the show.
Over the years, OWN has gone through many public struggles, as it gains its footing. Five years into it, OWN has turned things around, finding much success through working with Tyler Perry. With that precedent set, “Greenleaf” has given OWN record ratings, debuting at 3 million in its series premiere.
