During the summer of 2007, there was a new craze that swept the nation, the “Cupid Shuffle.” Infectious, the song replaced every other dance song and now owns family reunions and boat parties. The man behind this song was Cupid, a native of Louisiana.

Some believe Cupid was a one hit wonder, but this is not the case. Before and since “Cupid Shuffle,” Cupid has been a fixture, especially in his native Louisiana. He last released an album in 2012 and recently worked with fellow Louisiana artist, Mystikal.

Recently, Cupid took out time to talk to Hip Hop Vibe. During the interview, Cupid talked about the long lasting impact “Cupid Shuffle” has had over the past eight years. The conversation also saw Cupid speak about some new work he has.

Read the entire interview below:

You had a big year in 2007 with “Cupid Shuffle,” can you tell us what the experience was like to have such a big hit? It caught me off guard, being a blues singer and being more in tune with the old school acts. But, it felt good to catch on with the mainstream with a record that had no demographic. It was great for my career, as a platform. This really helped me get known with modern music, it was very new.

What people don’t realize is that you were around for a few years prior to this, what were the early years like for you? I first started off, I was doing a lot of hooks on the Bounce songs in New Orleans. I was one of the first singers to do this and then I went into the Blues market, because I am a Blues singer. Growing up, I was around all of the biggest Blues singers, that was the foundation I had before Cupid Shuffle.

In terms of new music, what do you have coming up? I just released a new project called Dance Fever. It will be a five part project of party music. The first edition dropped in January, consisting of up-tempo R&B, Blues, etc. My music is up-tempo like a modern version of Cameo and Frankie Beverly & Maze. What people don’t realize is that old people don’t have dance music, but young people do. So, I make the dance records and now you need one of my records to get the party started.

Who can people expect to see you working with in the future? Well, I just worked with Mystikal on his new project. I have been reaching out to my man, Raheem DeVaughn, I want to do a party record with him. Outside of this, I am working with more of the old school artists and making music. I reach out to the people I was a fan of and I want to work with them, reach out to the radio and get more of those type records on the radio.

Can you let the people know where they can find you on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram? Oh yeah! @OfficialNewCupid on Instagram, @NewCupid on Twitter, and New Cupid on Facebook.
