When it comes to R&B music, the primary names shown off in the mainstream are rivals, Chris Brown and Drake. Both of which have become more of rappers than singers, as Drake always was primarily a rapper. But, El-Jay is bringing R&B back to the days of New Jack Swing.
El-Jay is in the midst of a strong run and he has a new single that has taken over the internet and soon the airwaves. Close to popular West Coast rapper, Shorty Mack, El-Jay featured him on his new single, “Emergency.” As he puts the rest of his music together, El-Jay has gotten a head start on his competition.
Hip Hop Vibe had the opportunity to talk to El-Jay, just as he is preparing his summer run. In the conversation, El-Jay was very open about his collaboration with Shorty Mack and their brotherly relationship. El-Jay also spoke about Gee Major and the projects they are working on.
Read the entire interview below:
Right now, how are you feeling as R&B’s next major sensation? Man, it feels pretty good. I am just trying to keep my buzz going strong and taking the game to another level.
You have a collaboration with Shorty Mack, “Emergency?” Yes sir.
How did that track come together? I was actually in the studio and going through some records and listening to beats. When I heard this one, I knew it was a hit and I played it for Shorty Mack and we linked up. He is like a big bro to me, so we knocked that one out.
Do you and Shorty Mack have anything else coming up? Yeah, we got a few things in store we are working on. We are constantly working on new stuff, so we might go into the archives and pull something out.
Are you still working with Gee Major? Yes.
What else do you have in store with him? Man, we have been getting together and working on my sound. We work on my writing game and my music and he got me introduced to The Executives, who produced the song with Shorty Mack. Definitely, we will be doing more work with Gee Major.
What is it like working with Gee Major? Working with Gee Major is like a domino effect, he opens up so many doors when you have the chance to work with him.
How do you feel about the overall West Coast scene? We’re building an empire over here, we are lions about to take over everything. Myself, Shorty Mack, and Gee Major are going global.
How can connect with you online? Twitter is @elj1ay and Facebook is El-Jay, connect with me, I love talking.
