Only a select few acts get credit for helping to shed light on the Southern hip hop scene. Often overlooked in these list of artists is Nappy Roots, the popular foursome from Kentucky. While they have been around since the mid-1990s, they gained mainstream fame in 2002.
Nappy Roots emerged in 2002 with the release of their single, “Awnaw,” followed by “Po’ Folks,” featuring Anthony Hamilton. It’s the second single that most people know Nappy Roots for. But, they have many classic tracks that hardcore fans know of.
Hip Hop Vibe was present during Nappy Roots’ performance at SXSW in Austin. It was a performance of their classic songs and their memorable hits. Of course, this included “Po’ Folks,” but there was no cameo performance from Anthony Hamilton like on the original song.
