HHV Exclusive: Q The Question reviews Hopsin’s recent Philadelphia show

I have been following Hopsin and his Funk Volume movement for about a good two years now. As a die-hard fan of hip-hop, I love going to concerts and seeing artist perform and checking who has the ability to put on a great show.

When I heard Hopsin was coming to town, I knew I just had to be there. When I first heard of Hopsin, it was of course through XXL’s annual Freshman Class issue. I heard his record “Sag My Pants” and was instantly a fan. Hopsin right now is on his “Knock Madness,” tour currently promoting his album of the same title. He recently stopped by the Theatre of Living Arts last night here in Philadelphia.

Hopsin for one has great energy and he had the crowd going wild. One of the key points of being a great performer is crowd control and his internet following indeed had a full crowd at the Philadelphia show.  One of my favorite moments was walking into the show as he had the crowd going crazy while performing “Gimme That Money”. Hopsin was fully prepared to please the crowd for over an hour and keep his energy up. DJ Hoppa his tour DJ added in his part assisting Hopsin and showed why it’s always important to have a tour DJ you have chemistry with.

It was fun as well as Hopsin showed love to the fans even tossing bottles of water in the crowd just to have fun with the fans. The lighting during his shows were fun as well, especially when he performed some of my favorite dark records such as “Tears to Snow”, “Good Guys Get Left Behind” and his verse from the Tech 9 featured cut “Am I a Psycho.”

It is always amazing to me when artist perform and fans know every single word to their song. This was displayed when Hopsin got the crowd hyped up as he performed “Hop is Back”. When the third verse came on which contains some shots at Kanye West and Kendrick Lamar in a hysterical manner, it was funny to watch the crowd know it line for line.

It is obvious Hopsin loves to perform and tries to give it his all when pleasing his fans. The crowd favorites were of course the Tyler the Creator diss “Ill Mind of Hopsin”, and he gave it his best when rocking the crowd having them wave back and forth.

Capping off the night which I had waited for him to perform was one of my favorite records and a Hopsin classic “Sag My Pants”.  This record right here showed why it was the one everyone was waiting for. The record is already hot but the performance of the song made it even better. The hook is fire and the crowd again when Hopsin pointed the mic to the fans sung the chorus in pure joy. No only that towards the end of the show he took some time to show his appreciation for the fans shaking hands, taking pictures, you name it.

In retrospect I support Hopsin and his Funk Volume movement. While I was supposed to have been purchased my copy of “Knock Madness” on Itunes, I indeed grabbed it yesterday for sure, a hard copy for sale and also copped Dizzy Wright’s “First Agreement” EP as well as his promotions team was selling music and merchandise. Keep it up Hopsin and the whole Funk Volume team!
