HHV Game Changers: Petey Pablo – “Freek-A-Leek”

Everybody is talking about North Carolina’s hip hop scene. It is the opposite of what most expect, as the scene is very lyrical and most expect the Crunk scene. Just like in other scenes, the North Carolina scene has changed, but it was once the home of Crunk through Petey Pablo.

No disrespect to anybody coming out in North Carolina, but Petey Pablo is a legend within the Tar Heel state and he set the bar pretty high. Initially written off as a one hit wonder after his 2001 single, “Raise Up,” Petey Pablo came back three years later. He released his Still Writin in My Diary: 2nd Entry in 2004 to much success.

“Freek-A-Leek” was the first single and it hit top ten in Billboard, becoming one of the first anthems of the summer of 2004. This single proved North Carolina artists had staying power and boosted Petey Pablo out of the one hit wonder category. “Freek-A-Leek” definitely was a game changer.
