Throughout the year of 2011, there was one voice which remained constant. While Lil Wayne and Rick Ross appeared in more headlines, Drake silently dominated 2011. Despite his Take Care sophomore effort being delayed, Drake still managed to take over the rap game, once and for all. With the album not even two months old, it is already platinum, Drake’s second album to certify platinum.

Coming into 2011, there was much anticipation for Rick Ross and his God Forgives, I Don’t album. Preparing the album, Rick Ross released the first single early in 2011. The song, “Made Men” featuring Drake, became a minor hit, setting the stage for Drake’s dominance. While fans wondered when Rick Ross would release his new album, Drake began crafting his second effort.

Along the way, Drake lended his voice to hit singles for Lil Wayne and DJ Khaled, both songs dominating both halves of the summer. The bigger hits of 2011 may have been by Rick Ross and Lil Wayne, but many of their songs featured contributions from Drake. When his album finally did hit shelves, fans flocked to it and his singles, “Headlines” and “Make Me Proud,” have shaped the latter half of 2011.

From a popularity standpoint, Drake is hands down the artist of the year.
