With his sophomore album, J. Cole hit the nail on the head. Born Sinner is the most-authentic, pure hip hop album to drop this year. J. Cole proved there was no sophomore jinx with his music, having everybody sing along to “Power Trip” with Miguel and then bringing TLC back with “Crooked Smile.”
For some reason, hip hop is obsessed with first week sales figures and J. Cole intentionally pitted himself against Kanye West’s Yeezus. Most projections had Kanye going platinum or gold in his first week and easily winning the first week. Kanye West did win, but it was a squeaker.
In the weeks since the albums came out, J. Cole’s Born Sinner has consistently beaten out both Kanye West and Yeezus. J. Cole has now officially crossed gold with Born Sinner and he has done so before Kanye West has. This past week, J. Cole moved 27,000 copies.
