J Cole responds to Kendrick Lamar diss on 7 Minute Drill
J. Cole rose to fame and prominence around the same time as Drake and Kendrick Lamar. Back then, the rap world was trying to make Cole the Nas to Drake’s Jay-Z. That said, Kendrick was lumped into the category on J. Cole’s side in a nonexistent beef. What proceeded to take place is Cole and Drake became the consistent “album a year” rappers. Meanwhile, Kendrick drops once in a blue moon. As a result, Cole and Drake formed the alliance. Kendrick threw insults at Cole, leading to Jermaine’s “7 Minute Drill.”
J. Cole was originally perceived to be the rapper who wouldn’t consistently drop albums. Instead, he kept dropping surprise albums with no features that went platinum. Before Cole, no rapper accomplished that feat since 1989. Now, he’s made it commonplace. Also, he’s broken the stigma of only working with certain kinds of artists. Few people would’ve predicted J. Cole making music with the likes of 21 Savage and Young Thug, but he has classics with them.
J. Cole formed an alliance with Drake, but they were close from the beginning. However, he originally planned to do a joint album with Kendrick Lamar. While J. Cole had a successful debut, Kendrick had a huge debut, which pushed collaborations back. After that, he went on hiatuses. Now, he’s returned, showing up on Future and Metro Boomin’s “Like That,” dissing Drake and J. Cole. As a result, Cole came with “7 Minute Drill,” responding to Kendrick.
