“I went from the favorite, to the most hated,” Jay-Z stated on Kanye West’s “I’m So Appalled,” taken from My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. The phrase is so true, as Jay-Z’s status in the rap game has dramatically changed over the past sixteen years. Going from being relatively unknown, to being the favorite son, to being frowned upon, Jay-Z has gone throung numerous ups and downs.

On his next line, Jay-Z states “which would you rather be, underpaid or overrated,” again boasting of his wealth. In 2003, Jay-Z purchased a stake in the New Jersey Nets, making immediate plans of moving the team to Brooklyn. It took nine years, but Jay-Z finally took the Nets to Brooklyn. With their inaugural season as the Brooklyn Nets set to begin next month, Jay-Z is performing nightly in their arena, Barclays Center.

While Jay-Z is the face of the Nets, he only owns a small percentage of the franchise. A number of detractors have always mentioned how Jay-Z only owns a small percentage of the team. However, Jay-Z had a message for all of his haters and he went on to perform “99 Problems.”
