Very few saw the vision in 1996, but it was all laid out for Jay-Z. Taking his earnings as a hustler from Brooklyn, Jay-Z teamed up with Damon Dash and Kareem “Biggs” Burke and never looked back. Starting Roc-A-Fella Records, Jay-Z became the biggest rapper in the game and forged alliances with the biggest companies in the world.

Seventeen years later, Jay-Z is worth a half a billion dollars and he has much more coming. Four years have passed since Jay-Z last released an album, but he is still considered hip hop’s central figure. Many of the current hip hop stars are either managed by Jay-Z or mentored by him in the case of Rick Ross.

Time Out NY recently held a countdown for their number one all-time artist. The man chosen at the top of their list was Jay-Z. Also included on the list was Big Daddy Kane, Digable Planets, Nas, The Notorious B.I.G., Wu-Tang Clan, and The Beastie Boys. Kool Herc and Public Enemy also found themselves included on the list.
