Back in 1996, it was an incredible year for music, but no one could predict what would happen next. Until it happened, nobody expected both Tupac and Biggie to die within a year. At the time, Jay-Z was barely known, so few expected him to literally own the industry by 2009.

In the end, 1996 was the end of the Tupac era, and the beginning of the reign that was and is Jay-Z. That year saw MC Lyte have her most commercial success, but that soon ended. There was also good music from Aaliyah and Toni Braxton.

Ultimately, Jay-Z’s focus on business kept him in the inner circle and the year of 2009 saw him leave Def Jam to start Roc Nation. Back in 2015, there were rumors of a new Tupac album dropping on Roc Nation, which many wrote off as ridiculous. Now, it’s being reported that Roc Nation purchased his entire discography for a whopping $384 million.
