Given the big names on their roster, the Miami Heat have become one of the most-popular basketball teams in hip hop. Lyrics about the team are spread in songs from many of the top artists, most notably on DJ Khaled’s “I’m on One.” Lil Wayne references the team with the line “all my niggas got that heat, I feel like Pat Riley.” New York fans, however, also had something to rejoice about when the New York Knicks landed Amare Stoudemire.

Those who are hip hop and NBA fans have tried to create symmetry between the Knicks and the hip hop scene. For the first time in nearly ten years, the New York Knicks returned to the playoffs in 2011. Despite an average record and a poor playoff performance, the future looked bright because the team boasts two of the most-successful players in the league, also boasting Carmelo Anthony.

New York Knick fans felt the team would play better if they had an entire season to play with each other. This did not quite happen, with the lockout-shortened NBA season, but the season eventually started. With the regular season winding down, the New York Knicks appear to be going backwards, even with the emergence of Jeremy Lin. Yesterday, the Knicks’ coach of five years, Mike D’Antoni resigned. Longtime New York Knicks’ fan, Joe Budden, sees this as a positive sign, as he explained during his last appearance on MTV.
