Last year, the “New West” officially emerged into the mainstream when Kendrick Lamar received worldwide recognition for his work. For years, Game had been the newest artist from the Los Angeles area releasing music. But, he recognized the talent for his fellow Compton rapper and he featured Kendrick Lamar on his chart-topping The R.E.D. Album.

Soon, Kendrick Lamar would be working with Dr. Dre. As Dr. Dre refocused on Aftermath Entertainment, he announced his two artists as Kendrick Lamar and Slim the Mobster. During the summer of 2011, Kendrick Lamar would capture the attention of the world with Section.80. Despite the acclaim of his album, he made a bold decision to craft an official solo debut, instead of pushing his older work.

Kendrick Lamar is one year removed from this decision and three days away from releasing good kid, m.A.A.d. city, his official debut album. With his album finally due, Kendrick Lamar has been making his media rounds. Al Lindstrom recently caught up with Kendrick Lamar and he discussed his new album and his relationship with J. Cole.
