Rightfully so, much acclaim has been directed toward Maybach Music standout, Meek Mill, over his dominance in 2011. The Philadelphia rapper was one several of 2011’s biggest hits, even leading a few, without releasing a studio album. Dominating from the mixtape level the way Meek Mill did, has never been done before. However, Meek Mill was not the only underground artist to have a mainstream impact.
The key factor in the revival of the West Coast hip hop scene has been Kendrick Lamar. Out of all the rappers in the “New West,” Kendrick Lamar has likely received the most-acclaim. This acclaim was not enough for the “braintrust” at MTV to name him one of their “Hottest MCs in the Game,” which did not go unnoticed. During his interview with KarenCivil.com’s “Civilized Talk,” K. Dot spoke on this, saying it is all about what the people want.
Realizing he has more work to do, Kendrick Lamar said he is more focused on elevating his game to the level of J. Cole and Drake. J. Cole, much like Kendrick Lamar, was left off the list, despite having a highly-successful album. Kendrick Lamar intends to release his official debut album in 2012, recruiting Pharrell and Q-Tip, along with others for production and other contributions. In detail, Kendrick Lamar discussed this, and much more, with “Civilized Talk.”
