Polar opposites dominated hip hop in 2012 and the game was driven by rookies. As previously mentioned, the first half of 2012 was dominated by Rick Ross and his company, Maybach Music. But, as the year began to take its own course, Kendrick Lamar became a bigger and bigger name.
Kendrick Lamar, a native of Los Angeles, was credited for being one of the rappers leading lyricism back into the game. Meanwhile, 2 Chainz continued to dominate the game through his party music. 2 Chainz received buzz off making music considered by some detrimental to hip hop, but his music comes with deeper meanings.
Sway Calloway has come under fire for his “Hottest MCs in the Game” list on MTV. One rapper who spoke out angrily was Kanye West and A$AP Rocky also spoke out. A lot of rappers missed the list, but Kendrick Lamar and 2 Chainz came out on top. Perhaps due to his focus on lyricism, Kendrick Lamar was named the “Hottest MC in the Game” and 2 Chainz made second on the list.
In celebration of his win, Kendrick Lamar performed “Poetic Justice,” featuring Drake, live on MTV.
