Many of hip hop’s “firsts” were accomplished by LL Cool J. He is one of the rappers who opened the doors for the commercial success that hip hop artists now enjoy on a daily basis. Even the acting, LL Cool J was among the first, with Krush Groove, back in 1985.

LL Cool J, that same year, released his first album on Def Jam, and helped kick off the iconic label. In 2008, LL Cool J left his longtime label home, but also began playing on “NCIS: LA.” On that show, LL not only stars, but is also one of the executive producers.

Yesterday, LL Cool J made hip hop history, again, when he became the first rapper in history to be honored by the Kennedy Center. He also gave the speech, for the event. LL Cool J was honored alongside Lionel Richie, Norman Lear, Gloria Estefan, and Carmen de Lavallade.
