Lori Lightfoot was elected as Chicago’s mayor, in 2019. Immediately, she was thrust into the Jussie Smollett drama. Lightfoot was elected, following the highly unpopular mayorship of Rahm Emmanuel. It was hoped that Mayor Lightfoot would lead Chicago in a different direction. However, she was disliked more than Emmanuel. Many have said she was the worst mayor Chicago ever had. As a result, she lost her re-election bid. Lightfoot is blaming it on being a Black woman in America.

Lori Lightfoot won the 2019 election to become Chicago’s mayor. However, she faced immediate backlash. Despite her campaign promises being popular, in actuality her stances turned people off. One, such as her position on cutting police funds was popular. But when the crime in Chicago increased, people were upset. As a result, Lori Lightfoot would moderate her stance. In addition, she had to deal with lockdowns and protests throughout her time in office.

Lori Lightfoot ended up losing her re-election bid and she has spoken out. Ahead of the election, she spoke with The New Yorker. During the interview, Lori Lightfoot discussed her unpopularity. Among other things, she said she is a Black woman in America. She said she felt people didn’t like seeing her with this kind of power. In the end, when she lost, she pointed to that as the reason. However, Lori Lightfoot was unpopular, not based on neither her race, or her political leanings.
