Last year, during the award season, the #OscarsSoWhite trend took over social media. It was so big of a topic that Stacey Dash spoke out about it. While it did nothing to change last year’s Academy Awards, it did lead to some major changes for this year.

Off the bat, Jimmy Kimmel came out swinging with his racially-charged jokes. On a serious note, Mahershala Ali ended up winning the first award of the night. He took home Best Supporting Actor for his role in Moonlight.
