Man on Zoom for suspended license case joins court while driving
An Ann Arbor judge was left astounded during a court hearing for a man with a suspended license. He was shocked when the defendant joined the Zoom call while driving. The incident occurred two weeks ago in Ann Arbor during a hearing involving Corey Harris, who was facing charges for driving with a suspended license.
Court footage captured the moment Judge Cedric Simpson’s disbelief as Harris appeared on screen from behind the wheel. The defendant claimed he was pulling into his doctor’s office, but the judge was not convinced.
“Mr. Harris, are you driving?” Simpson asked. Harris responded, “Actually, I’m pulling into my doctor’s office. Just give me one second, I’m parking right now.”
Simpson, visibly frustrated, dropped his pen and rested his head on his hand, questioning the situation. Harris’ public defender attempted to adjourn the case, but the judge wasn’t having it. “This is a driving while license suspended [case], and he was just driving, and he didn’t have a license,” Simpson remarked.
Realizing the gravity of his actions, Harris was ordered to turn himself into the Washtenaw County jail by 6 p.m. that evening and would be held without bond.
His defense attorney commented on the situation, expressing a wish for a world where non-violent offenses don’t lead to jail time, but refused to elaborate further. Harris is scheduled for his next court appearance on June 5.
