Man spent 44 years in prison for false rape claim gets $25 million
Unfortunately, some people wind up in trouble for things they didn’t actually do. In the case of a man from North Carolina, it cost him forty-four years of his life. The man is named Ronnie Long and he was falsely accused of raping an underage woman in 1976. As a result, he ended up spending forty-four years in prison. Once the claims were proven to be untrue, Long was released from prison. In addition, he was awarded $25 million in damages.
In 2020, Ronnie Long was released from prison, after his convictions were vacated. Also, Long filed a lawsuit against the city of Concord, North Carolina. Located twenty five miles outside of Charlotte, the city is where the allegations took place. Long was accused of raping an underage White woman at knifepoint. He was ten years older than the woman. After spending a lifetime in prison, Long was proven to be falsely accused, so he was released from prison.
Ronnie Long was awarded $25 million, from the complete damages he received. However, those who have represented him feel that justice was far from served. Without question, the $25 million has definitely helped improve Long’s quality of life. But had he not spent forty-four years in prison, over false allegations, he may have had a much more productive life. Four years after his prison release, the local news caught up with him.
