Maryland man arrested after toddler shoots herself with ghost gun

A 20-year-old man from Cheverly, Maryland, identified as Jayvon Thomas, has been arrested on multiple firearms charges. After a 4-year-old girl accidentally shot herself with a ghost gun, there was much outrage. The incident occurred on Sunday, June 2, at approximately 10:45 p.m., according to the Prince George’s County Police Department (PGPD).

How The Child Got Shot

Officers arrived at the 6400 block of Landover Road in Cheverly. There, they found the young victim with a single gunshot wound. She was promptly transported to a local hospital. Thankfully, her injuries were deemed non-life-threatening. Preliminary investigations revealed that the girl had been playing hide-and-seek. However, she discovered a loaded, unserialized firearm, known as a ghost gun, under a bed. She accidentally discharged the weapon. Thus, injuring her arm.

Who Jayvon Thomas Is

Police confirmed that no other individuals in the apartment were harmed. Jayvon Thomas, a relative of the victim, faces severe legal repercussions. This incident is not Thomas’s first encounter with the law. Previously, he was charged with the murder of 24-year-old professional boxer Anwar “The Silent Assassin” Wingate. During an armed robbery in November 2023, Wingate lost his life. Although he was arraigned in January and placed on home confinement with electronic monitoring, his case is still pending. Thus, set to reconvene on June 8.

The Legal Impact and Local Government Response

Despite inquiries, the U.S. Attorney’s Office did not provide an immediate response regarding Thomas’s release. Furthermore, this incident has reignited discussions about ghost guns and their accessibility. Prince George’s County Council Member Krystal Oriadha emphasized the need for stricter regulations, stating that local efforts must intensify to prevent such tragedies.

Oriadha has introduced legislation aimed at curbing access to ghost guns by making the dissemination of information required to produce these firearms illegal.

“Change starts long before the gun goes off,” she stated. As a result, highlighting the importance of proactive measures in combating gun violence.
