Five years ago, Meek Mill began a strong mixtape run, which made him one of the hottest artists in Philadelphia. Meek Mill would quickly catch the attention of T.I., who signed him to Grand Hustle Records. Due to both of their legal issues, however, the deal did not last.

Back on the Philadelphia mixtape circuit, Meek Mill continued his strong run, building an even bigger fan base. Rick Ross began recruiting Wiz Khalifa, who would turn him down. Motivated, Rick Ross focused on expanding Maybach Music and soon added Meek Mill, of Philadelphia, to his label.

Meek Mill would join Wale at Maybach Music. Both Wale and Rick Ross had connections to Jay-Z, who signed Ross at Def Jam. With their strong relationships with Jay-Z, Meek Mill signed a management deal with Roc Nation. However, after a ruined performance in Brooklyn, Meek Mill said he had “Dumb ass management” on Twitter.
