Through the mixtape scene, Meek Mill became the most-popular rapper in Philadelphia. His mixtape tracks were making the radio and his releases were attracting fans from all around the world. As far as unsigned artists went, Meek Mill was among the top. Focused on releasing more mixtapes, Meek Mill had no idea Rick Ross was familiar with his movement until they talked on Twitter.
Rick Ross started 2011 off in high fashion, adding Wale and Meek Mill to his young Maybach Music label. Having one of the hottest mixtape rappers in Meek Mill and Interscope’s hidden gem, in Wale, led to an incredible buzz being built by Maybach Music. Maybach Music would find an official label home with Warner Bros. Records and Self Made, Vol. 1 was released.
Though popular, with cult followings, Wale and Meek Mill enjoyed mainstream success, due to the album. Meek Mill, without releasing an album, arguably had a bigger year, in 2011, than Wale did, charting higher on MTV’s Hottest MCs in the Game list. One year later, the MMG crew is back in the studio, preparing Self Made, Vol. 2 and this time around, there will be more input on the sound from Meek Mill and Wale.
Meek Mill recently sat down with MTV News and discussed this.
