A classic movie and song is introduced to a new generation. With the holiday season approaching, companies are finding different ways to market upcoming sales and promotions. Walmart is one of the biggest franchises around and this year they pulled out a huge trick in time for Black Friday. Their new ad is a reunion of the 2003 classic film Mean Girls, starring Missy Elliot.
As a pioneer of female rap, Missy Elliot is credited for creating the sound of the late 90’s. Producing mega hits with long time partner Timbland, for Aaliyah, SWV and 702 she established her producing ability. Her 1997 debut album Supa Dupa Fly debuted at number 3 on the Billboard 200. That was the highest charting debut for any female rapper during that time. She followed up with five more albums, creating hits like “Hot Boyz”, “Get Ur Freak On” and “One Minute Man”. Selling over 40 million records worldwide, winner of four Grammy Awards and multiple platinum singles, Missy is one of the greatest female artist in history.
Further proving her influence, her single “Pass The Dutch,” became a cultural theme song. Also a featured single on the Mean Girls soundtrack, it’s the most recognizable sound in the entire film. The new Walmart commercial features Missy Elliot as a gym teacher, while the song is played throughout. Guest appearances from Lindsey Lohan and Amanda Seyfried also made for eye- catching commercial.
