Mother of two dies in tragic fire sparked by synthetic hair

In a heartbreaking incident in Tantobie, near Stanley, County Durham, a mother of two died from severe burns. This happened after her synthetic hair extensions caught fire. Tracy Ann Gardiner, 46, tragically passed away in her smoke-filled bedroom following a fire sparked by her hair extensions. The fire ignited as she lit a cigarette. As a result, the extensions dripped molten material onto her clothing, setting her bedding ablaze.

Local resident, Stuart Tinnion, noticed black smoke billowing from Gardiner’s home. So, he attempted to alert her by banging on the door. However, he was unsuccessful. Despite brave efforts by Tinnion and another passerby, David Bennett, they were hindered by thick smoke. As a result, they could not reach Gardiner in time.

Durham Constabulary confirmed that there were no suspicious circumstances surrounding the fire. The inquest at Crook Coroners’ Court revealed that Gardiner had been struggling with alcoholism. In addition, forensic analysis indicated she was severely intoxicated at the time of the fire.

Fire investigators determined that the fire originated in the kitchen and quickly escalated as the burning material contacted other flammable surfaces. Assistant Coroner, Rebecca Sutton, recorded a verdict of misadventure. She noted that the incident underscores the dangers of synthetic hair products near open flames.
