In 1994, The Notorious B.I.G. proved he knew how to translate street successes into hit records. Biggie jumped on the “Juicy Fruit” record, from Mtume, in 1982. That not only put Biggie on the map, but also brought a renewed interest to the “Juicy Fruit” single.
Mtume has become a big player in music, behind the scenes. Even before Biggie sampled his music, Mtume was working with many artists from his own generation, and TV projects. After “Juicy,” Mtume has seen countless samples of “Juicy Fruit,” based off B.I.G.’s version.
Recently, Mtume stopped by “The Breakfast Club,” where he sat down with DJ Envy, Angela Yee, and Charlamagne Tha God. They talked about “Juicy,” Puffy, and Biggie, along with sampling’s evolution. He spoke on working with Miles Davis, along with many other legends, and more.
