In the early 2000s, Mystikal established himself as one of the most-popular rappers in the game. Back then, Mystikal was nearing a decade in the game, having a brief solo run before joining No Limit Records. With No Limit being the most-popular crew in the game, at the time, Mystikal enjoyed minor success. But, when he broke out on his own, he took over the game.

Fans had gotten used to Mystikal releasing an album a year. In 2002, Mystikal was expected to release another album. Instead of a third album in as many years, Mystikal was instead sentenced to prison. Mystikal would spend six years in prison, as the rap game went through several changes. Once freed, Mystikal focused back on his music and is now signed to Cash Money Records.

During a recent interview with Hip Hop Nation, Mystikal credited Lil Wayne and Birdman for not only saving his career, but also saving his life. Mysitkal also spoke on his prison time in the interview.
