Months following his death, hip hop is still mourning the loss of Heavy D, as fans never truly had a chance to heal, with so many other icons passing away. Despite losing Heavy D last fall, his name will go on in 2012 and Nas is one reason for this. When choosing the long-awaited second single from his long-awaited tenth album, Nas chose the Heavy D-produced “The Don.”

Before Heavy D died, Salaam Remi played the single for Nas and he immediately decided it was going to be the single. Nas said the song would be golden once it was chosen as a single. During the development of the song, Heavy D passed away, however. After Heavy D’s death, Remi informed Nas of who was composing the track.

With Heavy D gone, Da Internz came in and completed the song. Heavy D was impressed with the first single, “Nasty,” so he delivered another single to Nas. In his interview with MTV News, this, along with much more is discussed.
