In many ways, the music landscape is still shaped by Aaliyah and her tragic death. Prior to her death, Aaliyah released her third album, which was self-titled. At the time, Aaliyah was actually struggling with her record sales and with her single performance.
However, her death, coinciding with “Rock The Boat” releasing to radio helped her rebound. Then, the tributes, and the overall appreciation of her talent, in retrospect, helped her get the recognition she deserved, all along. Her music has inspired many of the current stars.
Nicki Minaj made a horrible misstep, however, and being clear it doesn’t look like she was making fun of Aaliyah’s death. However, she did reshare something sent to her from fans in some kind of chat group. It wasn’t even what she shared, it was that the group was called “Aaliyah Airlines” and includes an airplane emoji, along with a fire emoji.
