For years, Nipsey Hussle has done his thing as an independent artist. He had chances to sign with major labels and even came close to doing a venture with Maybach Music. In the end, Nipsey Hussle stayed indie and made close to $100,000 off his Crenshaw mixtape with DJ Drama.

Nipsey Hussle caught the attention of Jay Z with his #Proud2Pay campaign. Along with free downloads of the project, Nipsey Hussle was selling 1,000 packages of the album for $100. Jay Z purchased 100 copies of the album, which was definitely big for the Los Angeles rapper.

Big Boy invited Nipsey Hussle over to Real 92.3 and Crenshaw was one of the things they talked about. During the interview, Nipsey Hussle spoke on his new album, Victory Lap, and he also spoke on his #Proud2Pay concept, which Jay Z literally bought into. He went on to explain why he turned down a role in Straight Outta Compton, despite Snoop Dogg wanting him to be in it.
