Paul Silas, former coach of the Charlotte Hornets and New Orleans Pelicans, has passed away at age 79

Paul Silas legendary NBA player and coach has passed away

Paul Silas began his career, in the NBA, as a player. However, he is best known for his time as a coach. Silas played with the Celtics from 1972 through 1976. During his rookie year, Paul Silas played for the St. Louis Hawks, and was there when they relocated to Atlanta. After that, he spent three seasons with the Phoenix Suns. However, Silas is best known for playing with the Boston Celtics. After all, that’s where he won two of his three championships.

Paul Silas holds the distinction of being LeBron James’ first ever NBA coach. When LeBron was drafted by the Cleveland Cavaliers, Silas was their head coach. This was a good look for Silas’ resume, as James went onto win Rookie of the Year. However, he did not continue as the Cavaliers’ head coach. Prior to this, Silas coached the Charlotte Hornets. He continued during the New Orleans relocation. In 2010, Silas returned to Charlotte, now coaching the Charlotte Bobcats, which lasted until 2012.

Paul Silas has mostly stayed out of the spotlight, in recent years. This is understandable, due to his age, and everything. However, with so many NBA documentaries, there has been room for Silas to come in and share his side of the story. In addition, his son, Stephen Silas, is the head coach of the Houston Rockets. Sadly, the elder Silas has returned to the headlines, just in a sad way. The NBA legend passed, this morning, at the age of 79.
