Various cities are celebrating the 50th anniversary of hip-hop in various ways this year, including in the birth city of hip-hop, in New York City. Meanwhile, the (Metropolitan Transportation Authority) MTA trains in NYC have also come up with a creative way to do so, in partnership with Universal Music Enterprises.

80,000 MTA metro cards have been distributed, in celebration of 50 years of hip-hop. Different NYC rappers are displayed on the cards as well, which feature NYC legends such as Pop Smoke, LL Cool J, Cam’ron, Rakim, and more. Universal initially launched these MTA metro cards for their “Hip Hop At 50 – Honoring 50 Years of Hip Hop: A Legacy of Rhythm, Revolution, and Soul” campaign.

“From standing on top of the Empire State Building to grabbing a slice at the corner pizza shop, NYC creates iconic moments that are recognized around the world,” said Rakim in a statement. “But it doesn’t get closer to real city life than swiping a metro card and standing clear of the closing doors. It’s an honor to be celebrating the 50th Anniversary on the streets…and now below them…of the city where hip-hop was born.”
