Since the release of The Seventh Seal, Rakim has been out of the public eye. Prior to 2009, ten years passed since Rakim last released an album. While he never promised to deliver an album every year, Rakim did promise to not stay away from the game that long again. Now, he is back in the studio, putting together another album.
Rakim said he has already started recording new tracks. The new tracks have been recorded with some high-profile names, but Rakim wants to keep the names private. There are two names Rakim does not mind mentioning, however. Rakim hopes to land the legendary producers, Pete Rock and DJ Premier, for his new album.
On this new album, Rakim said he wants to continue his legacy and his message, but he wants to work with new people. While keeping his style the same, Rakim is interested in working with rappers who have different styles. During the early 2000s, Rakim had the chance to work closely with Eminem, as they were both signed to Aftermath Entertainment and he also collaborated with Jay-Z in this time period.
It should come as no surprise that Rakim is a big fan of both Jay-Z and Eminem. While he did not mention wanting them to work with him on his new album, he will likely reach out to them. Rakim said he loves them, along with The L.O.X. and Wu-Tang Clan because of what they have done for hip hop, helping it grow internationally.
