As recently as Barack Obama’s first presidential campaign, there was no real urban news coverage. BET News had been off the air for a few years and mainstream networks provided no real coverage. After being “suspended” by CNN, Roland Martin decided to make a change.
Due to Obama’s ethnicity, BET and TV One started news programs to chronicle his campaign. Roland Martin spearheaded TV One’s news department and stayed after the campaign was over. But, being the only game in town means much criticism.
Roland Martin recently spoke on “The Tom Joyner Morning Show” and he discussed Birth of the Nation flopping in the box office. He credited this to backlash over Nate Parker having a white wife. Since early this morning, many people on Twitter have been going in on Roland Martin, ever since.
