Russ. The guy hip-hop loves to hate. During his rise to prominence in the game, Russ has garnered a lot of hate due to his brash and aggressively confident personality. Despite his self-made success, the industry at large wants to act like he doesn’t exist. However whenever Russ gives a hot take, that’s when everyone wants acknowledge what he has to say.

During his guest appearance on the the Brilliant Idiots podcast with Charlamagne tha God and comedian Andrew Schultz, Russ had some interesting opinions on white people’s place in hip-hop. Charlamagne brought up an instagram post by Russ describing white label executives who would sign black artists  they wouldn’t want around their own children.

As the conversation progressed, Russ explained the history of white societies adopting and appropriating black culture. Relating to the hip-hop game, some artists enter entertainment through hip-hop to gain popularity than abandon the culture, transform their aesthetic, and act as if hip-hop was merely an artistic phase for them.

“You can’t come into this from the vessel of hip-hop and use the clothes and the language and the music and then go on and start doing something white.”

That’s when Charlamagne interrupted, “Are you talking about Post Malone?”

Nah, I mean.. That’s a fair example because I do think that it’s an interesting thing to look at from that lens of where you come in with braids and golds to the point people are thinking you’re mixed and now, you know, you drink Bud Light and wear cowboy boots and stuff.”

While he did give Post his credit as a great musical artist, the point still stands. Check out the full interview below. The 1:26 time mark is where the discussion on Post Malone starts.
