The early 2000s were a simpler time in hip hop when Nelly reigned supreme. After a strong debut period in 2000-2001, Nelly faded from the spotlight. Just when they wondered where he was, Nelly came back stronger than ever with “Hot In Herre,” produced by Pharrell.
Nelly would score another 2002 hit in “Dilemma” with Kelly Rowland, giving him two Billboard Hot 100 number ones. Since then, Nelly saw a steady decline that left him an afterthought by 2008. However, he had businesses, including a stake in the Charlotte Hornets keeping him.
Apparently, it wasn’t enough, as Nelly was revealed to owe $2.4 million in back taxes. The IRS placed a lien on him, but clever internet people figured out a way to save Nelly by streaming his music close to 300 million times to bail him out. They are calling this campaign #SaveNelly and they have flooded Twitter to make it happen.
