Def Jam returned to the top of the game toward the end of the 1990s. Expanding, the label added a southern branch, named Def Jam South. In need of a label head, Scarface, the front man of Houston-based group, the Geto Boyz, was named the head of the new sub-label. The first artist Scarface brought to Def Jam South was Ludacris.
Ludacris rose to the top of the charts, releasing three successful albums in the early 2000s, going platinum several times over. However, after his first three albums, Ludacris was removed from Def Jam South and into the regular label. For years, Def Jam South remained frozen until DJ Khaled was named the new head of the label and brought new talent.
During a recent interview, Scarface revealed why he ended up leaving Def Jam. Despite bringing them “everything that is hot,” the label refused to give him anything. Scarface said he brought Rick Ross and T.I. to Def Jam, with them passing on Tip. After everything went south, Scarface decided to leave the label.
Switching gears, Scarface spoke on his upcoming album, Rooted. The album still does not have a release date, but Scarface is working hard to ensure the album is released before the end of the summer.
