Aside from the negative attention surrounding the West Coast hip hop scene, with the Death Row fiasco, many credited a lack of unity to the demise of the West Coast. For years, the only new artist to emerge from the West Coast, particularly the Los Angeles area, was Game. However, no artists followed his lead. In late 2009, many young West Coast artists began receiving a bit of media attention.

By 2011, the “New West,” as the new breed of West Coast artists are called, gained national media attention. The most-notable names, so far, have been Kendrick Lamar, Tyler, the Creator, and his movement, Odd Future. However, ScHoolboy Q has made headlines, as he delivered a mixtape a few weeks ago. With his buzz high, the Los Angeles rapper is hoping to soon collaborate with a veteran rapper.

When it comes to the Los Angeles hip hop scene, or any hip hop scene for that matter, Snoop Dogg has appointed himself the “big uncle.” Snoop Dogg holds an executive position with Priority Records, using this to help West Coast artists receive the same chances he had. At the same time, Snoop Dogg has recorded with several artists from the “New West.” During a recent interview, ScHoolboy Q expressed interest in being the next artist to work with Snoop Dogg. However, he does not share the same interests as Snoop Dogg, making it clear he is no “weed rapper.”
