At one point, Shyne was the face of Bad Boy Records. Despite a difference in looks and size, fans compared Shyne to the original Bad Boy star, The Notorious B.I.G. The voices of the two rappers were eerily similar, but their fates would be very different. The Notorious B.I.G. was brutally murdered, while Shyne went to prison after an altercation at Club New York.
During his prison sentence, Shyne would sever ties with Bad Boy Records and Diddy. In 2009, Shyne returned to the headlines, but was noticably different. Focused on being released from prison, Shyne did not speak highly of his former label boss. Diddy revealed he spoke to Shyne when he was in prison and this was denied by Shyne.
Their feud hit a peak in the fall of 2009 and Shyne continued to badmouth Diddy well into 2010 and 2011. However, the two announced a truce and were soon caught in a photograph together, while both were in Paris. Shyne released a statement to XXL about making peace with Diddy after all these years.
Read Shyne’s statement to XXL below:
“You can’t overstate the cultural significance of what Shyne and Diddy reconciling means.”
“You know I’m about it when it comes to them hammers, thus unfortunately this could have ended like Tupac and B.I.G. But what if Tupac and B.I.G ended like this and reconciled?”
“Let’s celebrate this moment as a historical event and a victory for hip-hop and Afro and Latin American men trained to exterminate each other. It’s a new day! L’chaim!!!”
“On a scale of what this says to African and Latin American men, who have been trained to self hate and to self-destruct, this is a watershed moment,†the proud rapper continued. “The paradigm shift that’s taking place as the way Afro and Latin American men deal with each other is tremendous. This could be a gigantic step in putting an end to the cycle of hate and violence that is self-genocidal and destroying the minority community by sending fathers off to jail or an early grave.”
