Acclaimed filmmaker, Spike Lee, is a fixture in the hip hop culture. He has not dropped an actual rap album, but Spike Lee has molded the culture over the past three decades. It has been a legacy that Spike Lee put forth through his films and the stories he told still impact hip hop.

Comparable to many other critics, Spike Lee was disappointed at the turn hip hop had taken a few years ago. But, for the most part, hip hop has been on an upswing over the past four years, reaching a new creative peak. Even though it is way too early to call, a lot of people call this current era a new renaissance.

Spike Lee, however, is now pleased with hip hop in 2013. There is a little of something for everyone during this current era of hip hop. Among the leaders of the new school is J. Cole. Hip-Hop Wired sat down with Spike Lee and he talked about this new hip hop and his admiration of J. Cole.
