Straphanger shot intervening in couple’s dispute on NYC subway
A 31-year-old man was shot and wounded early Sunday morning. He was trying to intervene in a dispute between a couple on an uptown 4 train on the Upper East Side, law enforcement sources said. The incident occurred at around 2:30 a.m. at East 86th Street and Lexington Avenue.
The victim sustained a gunshot wound to his left hand. As a result, he was taken to Cornell Hospital by EMS and is in stable condition. The suspect, who was fighting with his girlfriend, fled the scene after firing a round. Police have not yet identified or apprehended the suspect.
The shooting caused delays on the subway line. Thus, inconveniencing many commuters. Maylene Sanchez, a pregnant 33-year-old Krispy Kreme worker, had to take a $20 Uber to work due to the disruptions. She expressed frustration over the increased subway fares and the persistent safety concerns.
“There’s always cops in that station. They need to pay more attention,” said a 21-year-old coworker of Sanchez. Both workers were surprised by the incident, citing the frequent police presence at the station.
Despite the presence of at least five NYPD officers stationed at subway entrances Sunday morning, it remains unclear if any officers were at the scene during the shooting. The MTA stated that the local train line was roped off for scheduled maintenance.
The NYPD is continuing its investigation into the incident, and no further details have been released at this time.
