Teen fatally shot at Brooklyn Housing Project, suspect in custody

A 14-year-old boy was fatally shot Sunday morning at the Howard Houses public-housing project in Brooklyn, police said. The NYPD responded to a 911 call shortly before 10:30 a.m. They found the victim with a gunshot wound to the chest. As a result, he was rushed to Brookdale Hospital. There the young man was pronounced dead.

A suspect is currently in custody, and a firearm has been recovered, according to law-enforcement sources.

This tragic incident comes amid a troubling rise in violence targeting teenagers in New York City. Last month saw a particularly violent week with two teens killed and six others injured. An NYPD supervisor told The Post that 11% of gun arrests last year involved minors. Thus, a 120% increase from 2018. Additionally, about a quarter of youths arrested with guns in 2021 were either victims or perpetrators of shootings within two years.

The increase in youth violence has raised concerns and prompted calls for more effective measures to address gun violence and provide better support for at-risk teens. After all, there have been several tragedies involving teenagers in New York City, these past few years.
