The Paramount Network has officially cancelled the long running show Cops, a show that glorified police aggression, as the country is in an uproar over the countless cases of police brutality exposed and called out. After 32 seasons, the network has announced it’s decision to drop the reality show indefinitely. According to Hollywood Reporter, a network spokesperson stated:
“Cops is not on the Paramount Network and we don’t have any current or future plans for it to return.”
Other policing shows have also been under fire as A&E pulled Live PD also, but have not yet confirmed the show to be cancelled.
“Crime TV plays a significant role in advancing distorted representations of crime, justice, race and gender within culture and ‘Cops’ led the way, pushing troubling implications for generations of viewers.”
The organization said in a recent statement in light of the fact that all eyes are on the police force as they wave a guilty flag all over the country with words, actions, or both. The impact of protesters and the Black Lives Matter movement can truly be felt as we watch for the first time in the history of the United States, different companies and corporations are forced to face the systemic racism that has negatively effected minority groups for years. Each day a new company is apologizing, recognizing, and publicizing strategies to press forward to keep their mission and policies in alignment with equality for all people in spite of their race.
Several masks have been lifted as social media shares stories daily on CEOs resigning after making racist remarks, Karens being identified and reprimanded, and more. Change is slowly making its rounds and although we have a very long way to go, the small progress is change in the right direction.
